Penalty Taking
Still wounded from the final. To come so close is tough to take.

The shootout got me thinking. Just as many penalties were missed/saved as were scored.

Both keepers done very well. Cant bring myself to watch the shootout back but some of the penalties were poor from both sides. Not hit hard, or in a corner, weird run ups etc.

Then stumbled across this. Cant quite believe these stats if true?

https://www.myfootballfacts.com/premier-league/all-time-premier-league/premier-league-penalty-statistics/

Now I cant remember much football from the 90s. But one of my earliest memories is Julian Dicks taking a penalty and belting the life out of it. No chance for the keeper whatsoever.

1993 season. Out of 82 penalties only 1 was saved.

2019 season. Out of 84 penalties there were 21 saves.

Have goalkeepers really got that much better? Or has the art of penalty taking got that much worse?

If it is the later, we are missing a trick here.

Being a good penalty taker is an art. Noble himself is one of the best in europe. But are players now days over complicating them?

Yes ... and perhaps yes....

We have had 3 brilliant penalty takers over the years

Hursty.... BLASTS IT

Tonka.... BLASTS IT

Dicksy... BLAST IT

Says it all for me... fucking give it some rather than trying to outwit a keeper by running in like Max Wall

Re: Penalty Taking
no, I don't think goalkeepers are better. I just think the here was less showboating/fucking about before the kick back then. tonka and julian were all about the shot, no shuffling/dancing bollocks

..they tried the ABBA penalty system for a while (rather than the alternate kicks) - seemed to disappear without trace though

Re: Penalty Taking
goalkeepers have definitely improved, you look at the size of Donnarumma but also his athleticism.

Compare and contrast to that doddery old cunt Shilton feebly backpedalling in 90 and not getting anywhere near any of the kraut penalties

Re: Penalty Taking
Southall was a good at saving penalties (15 saved from 60).

I suppose his size helped filling up the goal area!

..Anti Niemi was good at saving penalties

.. (but only if the taker was called Niemi)

Re: Penalty Taking
Donnarama is a great goalkeeper no doubt about that.

But I think many other keepers could have saved Sanchos and Sakas penalties.

He went the right way for Kanes but it was hard and well placed so he could not get close enough.

Re: Penalty Taking
It is strange as over the years the rules for keepers have actually got more restrictive.

You have to be on your line when the ball is kicked (at least one foot needs to be I think?).

The only thing that has changed for the penalty taker is that they cant stop mid run up.

I actually think penalty taking is all about nerves and not technique as every professional footballer can place a ball pretty much anywhere. Its just can they do it under pressure. PL is probably the most pressure league in the world so maybe that accounts for the stats?

All the pissing around taking hop, skip and jumps has ruined the art of penalties.

Re: Penalty Taking
I suspect goalkeepers have benefitted a lot from video analysis of penalty takers... not just knowing that player X prefers to hit it to the right but being primed to look for certain give away clues in their run up that signals which way they're going to put it.

I do think that penalty takers try to be clever - I'd be interested in whether those that step and belt it have a better conversation rate than those that do the whole stuttered run up and trying to kid the goalie into moving first.

Re: Penalty Taking
rashfords penalty that got them to the quarters v PSG was one of the most high pressure , all-or-nothiing, perfectly placed and unsaveable freekicks you could arsk for - and Buffon staring him down - mind you this was a 2 years ago rashford...

I only saw/remember Dicks missing one penalty. He got a knock.on the head v Arsenal at home and said after that he could see three goals and didn't know which one to aim for.

Would have rightly been brought off for concussion these days though.

Re: Penalty Taking
I always feel players are more likely to miss when they do the stuttering run up.
It's similar with modern day players obsessed about out foxing the keeper by curling shots just inside the post instead of just leathering it at the goal as they used to.
It might look good but it's not as effective.

A penalty taker can get unlucky and a goalie can get lucky. Both can make a mistake
